How to tell which processes are worth automating
Frequency times fragility beats a long backlog of wishes. A short, honest audit usually finds three candidates worth more than the rest combined.

Automation backlogs tend to be sorted by enthusiasm. A better ordering is frequency multiplied by fragility: how often does the step happen, and how badly does it hurt when a human does it wrong or late?
Steps that are frequent and fragile — reconciliation, data re-entry between systems, approval chasing — pay back fast and keep paying. Steps that are rare and nuanced are usually better supported than replaced.
The other rule: design for exceptions first. Naive automation handles the happy path beautifully and then breaks trust the first time reality deviates. An exception queue that a human can see and clear is what makes automation survive its second month.
